Project Outline

Project: To research solar energy and how we can use it to power our houses by use of solar panels or solar windows.

Method: I will determine the benefits of solar panels/solar windows in the following ways.
1. Comparison: I will compare having a solar panel or window to not having one installed.
2. Costs: Determine the costs of the installation and monthly cost of hydro bill before and after installation.
3. Research: Use academic sources to research different types of solar panels or windows.

Questions/Problems:
How much energy is able to be absorbed from sunlight?

Will energy still be able to be absorbed on cloudy days or during the winter months?

How readily available are solar panels or windows?

Also:
Are solar panels/windows 100% green (is there anything about them that DOES hurt the environment)?

How can people be urged to install a solar panel/window?

  7. Dan,
I've got a book at home, "Home Improvement for Dummies" and it actually has a lot of ideas in it for renovations and upgrades that can improve the efficiency of a home. Let me know if you're interested in borrowing it.

  8. Hey Dan,
There is a book at the Kamloops Library that would be great for your project, it's called Natural remodeling for the not-so-green house : bringing your home into harmony with nature. Maybe you can look at how remodelling the house to make it green changes its 'home' feel?

Here is the page if you want to it out

  12. Dan,

Is there a company in town or in BC that does this work? would it be available here? Would the amount of sunlight be a problem. Sometimes Kamloops is very overcast and received little sun. How long until cost recovery?
